How to Bedazzle Your High Efficiency Washing Machine

Who says the refrigerator is the only appliance worthy of showing off your kids’ artwork, holding reminder notes, and keeping your to-do list?

Not me!

I recently read somewhere that families with children spend between 5 to 10 hours per week doing laundry (and less than 3 hours per week reading!).  If this necessary but oh-so-overwhelming chore is claiming so much of our time and attention it just makes sense that the washer and dryer would eventually edge out the fridge as the family message/memory board.  For example…

My sister uses her front loading High Efficiency (HE) washer as her command central – papering it with Post-It note reminders and an ever expanding to-do list, while a neighbor plasters her HE machine with decals to remind her of all the places she’s been.  Still another pal personalizes hers with magnetic picture frames to keep her kids close as she loads another load!   I found other fun ideas for how to make your laundry room your home’s hub on Country Living.com.

With bold new colors (Pumpkin! Turquoise Sky!  Champagne!), HE machines are allowing us to make style statements like never before.  Yet as these machines become sleeker and more stylish, what goes in them becomes increasingly important.  Using a regular detergent in an HE machine can spell disaster – regular detergent can create too many suds in the lower water levels which can prevent clothes from receiving a complete rinse.  These excess suds can also lead to residue build up since they are not as easily rinsed away – and over time they could lead to unpleasant odors (ugh), potential machine malfunctions or damage.

The bottom line?  For best performance, take good care of it, inside and out with High Efficiency laundry detergent.
