The downside of course is space. Or should I say lack of it (you apartment dwellers probably understand more than most!). My little laundry closet holds my washer and dryer and that’s about it. But I’ve come to learn that space and size doesn’t mean a lackluster laundry room.
So, I’ve begun to think about ways to make my laundry room more efficient, less cluttered and more appealing. Just because my space is small, I reasoned, doesn’t mean it can’t be great. And with those words ringing in my head, I set off on a virtual hunt for ways to make my little space the laundry room of my dreams.
First, I visited a bunch of different sites for inspiration. I liked the Container Store (www.containerstore.com) for its practical yet fun ideas for transforming the laundry room space. California Closets (www.californiaclosets.com) and Organizeitonline.com were also chock full of ideas and worth a look.
Next, I took stock of what really belonged in my laundry room – and what didn’t! A small space can feel even smaller if you’ve got too many products and other miscellany cluttering it up. Some High Efficiency washers and dryers can even go on top of one another, leaving you with more space so start stacking! Then, all you really need is a good HE detergent. Make sure to read the label carefully and look for the HE symbol, you’ll know you’re getting one that’s specially formulated to be lower sudsing than regular detergents while still providing efficient cleaning and rinsing.
Beyond clutter, my other big problem, of course, was storage. To create more of this very valuable real estate, I installed some shelves and a hanging rod above my washer and dryer and bought one of those cute laundry storage towers that fits neatly in between my machines. Honestly, it’s all about the shelves and collapsible racks.
The transformation is nearly complete – and I must admit, I’m loving my new laundry space. If you have other space-boosting ideas, please share them!
