A friend confessed the other day that the longest she’s ever gone without doing a load of laundry was five days – that may not sound like a long time, but it’s an eternity in a house with three kids!
Her admission made me wonder: how long had I ever allowed my laundry to pile up? To be honest, I couldn’t recall (thanks to selective memory), but her question got me thinking about my hamper and laundry basket and how it’s definitely time for an upgrade.
These days nothing beats hopping on the Web to scout out your options. So that’s just what I did…
My first stop was Organize.com, where I found a great selection of nice looking hampers. I particularly liked one that doubled as a bench. I’m a sucker for anything in the laundry room that does double duty – particularly in a tight space!
Next I was off to Holdn'Storage. This user-friendly site featured a triple compartment sorter on wheels, a variety of pop-ups and a good-looking pull out hamper that hides your dirty clothes in a drawer, but looks like a piece of bathroom furniture. Wow!
I also paid a visit to Stacks and Stacks. Here I found a selection of wicker and rattan hampers (round and square) as well as several steel and metallic options. Who says your laundry hamper can’t add a little sparkle?
My final stop was The Container Store, where I saw a lace-up bamboo hamper I liked as well as a “laundry box” that was touted as an “outstanding, attractive solution for storing and transporting loads of laundry and also ideal for toy storage.” The Container Store also featured a Bamboo Laundry Center (on casters) with a rod that allows you to hang freshly-pressed clothes or clothes you prefer to air dry, as well as a canvas-lined basket to hold clothes waiting to be folded (or ironed). There’s even a shelf at the bottom to hold your laundry detergent.
Who knew laundry baskets had come so far?!
Now that you have a fabulous new laundry basket, here is my next suggestion. Yes, the laundry basket is for dirty clothes only, but I think it still deserves a good cleaning once in awhile. So, depending on the material, take a wash cloth with some soap and water and give it a quick scrub. I also put a liner in my laundry basket – it helps prevent any smells lingering from damp clothes (gym, rain, etc.) from seeping into the laundry basket itself. And, if you use a laundry basket to cart your clothes to and from the laundry room, make sure you wipe it down after you’ve loaded the clothes into the washer. Most likely you’ll be using that same laundry basket to cart your clothes back to your closet, so keep it clean!
So, why not make a promise to not only empty your laundry basket more often, but to give it an upgrade – whether that means a good rinse or a whole new basket to show-off.
I’d love to hear about your favorite hamper haunts and in the meantime, happy shopping!
Kristen
